Fighting is the easiest part of war!
No one - friend or foe - wants to take on this band of marauders. After all, they don't call them the Rat Bastards for nothing. But now this bunch of mavericks, once welded together into a crack fighting unit, is coming unstuck between battles. It'll take the music of gunfire to bring the grimy gang back to life. And blood is the only life they know....
Too Mean to Die The Rat Bastards Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Len Levinson Ray Porter Audible Studios Books
After blowing the enemy ammo dump in Green Hell, the Ratba--ards are preparing for the hop from Guadalcanal to New Georgia. But in between the islands, MSG Butsko, CPL Bannon, good ol' Sam Longtree and Frankie LaBarbara have been given a week long furlough on Oahu.Author Levinson plays with a theme I myself have dabbled in: that some of the best men to have beside you in combat are the absolute worst to have when bullets are not flying. There's also an exploration of the affection strong leaders have for their go-to guys, demonstrated both by Butsko and Colonel Stockton (C.O. of the 23rd Infantry, of which the RBs are his Recon Platoon).
These horny, rowdy GI's aren't even in Honalulu for 24 hours before both Butsko and Bannon land in the stockade--Bannon for killing a bouncer in an upscale cathouse, and Butsko for nearly killing his wife's boyfriend and some other GIs. Amazingly, the troublemaker LaBarbara is the one who behaves responsibly. Sam Longtree, who, during a drunken moment of rare honesty, Butsko admits is a top-notch soldier (and I would agree) stays true to form--too smart to get in any trouble himself, but too loyal to not help his buddies get out of theirs.
There is almost no jungle combat in this installment of the series. What little there is takes place at the very end. It's kind of depressing to watch Butsko and Bannon behave so stupidly, ruining the furlough for everybody and making Stockton look bad just when he was up for promotion to Brigadier. Bannon is the most disappointing, blowing chance after chance to stay out of trouble...and creating trouble where there was none to begin with. Butsko knew visiting his wife was a bad idea, but did it anyway. After that he showed respectable restraint, but was forced into defending himself. That first mistake was all it took for him.
One nice treat is the introduction of Lt. Breckenridge, the RB's new (and first since "Hit the Beach") platoon leader, when Butsko is busted down the ranks. Breckenridge is a breed of officer I wish was not so rare in the military, and he's a great fit for the Recon Platoon.
Even though nobody picks up a RatBa--ards novel because they want to read about drunken, horny grunts raising hell in the Land of the Big PX, it's still a page-turner and hard to put down. That's how fun these characters are.
